my hero is non-binary, 2022
Textile banner with with text reading ‘my hero is non-binary’. The banner is a celebration of mine and my communities identity - which is often left uncelebrated as it’s amporphous and defintion defying nature perterbs people. The banner makes a bold but vague statment, much in the spirit of it’s community.
This banner was made as part of my residency at The Turnpike Gallery in Leigh, 2022 as part of their exhibtion ‘Creating Space: Imagine, Make, Play’. During the course of the residency I ran workshops with local schools and community groups around alternative heroes - who is given permission by society to be celebrated and who do we actually idolise? The outcomes of these workshops where then hung in the space, animating the exhibtion as the workshops developed.
